Suspect Captured After Officer Shot Dead In Polk County: Updated

POLK COUNTY, GA — A murder suspect who was briefly on the run was captured after an officer was shot dead Friday in Polk County, Patch has learned. Another officer was wounded in the shooting, according to news reports.

Hours earlier, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation issued a Blue Alert for Spangler, who is described as 5’8″ in height and weighing about 130 lbs., with brown eyes and brown hair.

After the shooting, he was believed to be in the vicinity of the 100 block of Santa Clause Road, in Cedartown near Cave Spring, the GBI said. Spangler was considered armed and dangerous.

“Do not approach, dial 911,” the agency said in the alert.

The officer who was shot dead was a police detective, according to the Polk County Standard Journal. Authorities told reporters at a news conference the deceased was identified as 29-year-old Kristen Hearne.

The officer that was wounded was wearing a bulletproof vest, the newspaper reports.

Polk County is about 50 minutes northwest of Atlanta. Cobb Sheriff’s vehicles were seen speeding toward the scene, local media reported.

The shooting took place between Cedartown and Cave Spring, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports. Spangler is a convicted felon who got out of Reidsville state prison in August 2016, the newspaper reports.
